Storm damage is the busiest time for screen repair
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. After a storm, screen crews across Broward get booked up quickly, so the sooner you document and report damage, the sooner you're on someone's schedule.
After-storm checklist
- Stay safe. Look from outside the cage first. If beams are bent, cracked or leaning, don't go in.
- Photograph everything. Wide shots of each wall and the roof, then close-ups of tears, bent members and debris, before you clean up.
- Clear debris carefully. Remove branches resting on the roof only if you can do it from the ground safely.
- Check your policy. Find out whether your enclosure (frame and/or screen) is covered and what your deductible is.
- Request a written quote. An itemized quote with photos is useful whether you pay yourself or file a claim.
Before the next storm
- Check hurricane bracing and tie-down cables before and after each storm, as HomeGuide recommends. Building codes require a tie-down cable with a bracket.
- Secure or store furniture, planters and pool toys so they don't get thrown into the screen.
- Trim branches and palm fronds that hang over the cage.
- Replace rusty fasteners. Corroded screws can cut structural strength sharply.
Repair or replace after a storm?
Torn mesh alone is a panel repair or a rescreen. Bent or broken aluminum is structural enclosure repair and often needs a permit. As one example, the City of Hollywood allows screen-fabric repair without a permit but requires one for any metal repair or replacement.

Frequently asked questions
Should I remove screen panels before a hurricane?
Practices vary and opinions differ. Some owners cut or remove roof panels to reduce wind load, but that has its own cost. Ask a screen contractor about your specific enclosure well before a storm.
Is my screen enclosure covered by homeowners insurance?
HomeGuide says pool screen enclosures are not covered by default in home insurance policies but coverage can be added, and some insurers cover the framing but not the screen. Check your policy.
How soon should storm damage be repaired?
As soon as practical. Torn panels can catch wind and pull more mesh loose, and damaged frames can be unsafe. If the frame is bent, keep people out until it's been checked.
