Screened patios, porches and lanais
A screened patio or lanai gets more daily use than most pool cages. Furniture scrapes the bottom panels, kids and pets push through doors, and sprinklers and sun break down mesh along one wall faster than the others. The good news is that these spaces are usually smaller and lower than a pool cage, so repairs and rescreens tend to cost less.

Upgrades worth asking about
- Kickplates along the bottom (8 to 16 inches tall) to keep out dirt and stop furniture and pet damage.
- Pet screen on the lower row if a dog or cat uses the space.
- Solar or privacy screen on the wall that faces the afternoon sun or a close neighbor.
- No-see-um mesh if you sit out at dusk.
HomeGuide notes a porch rescreen can often be done in 2 to 4 hours when no framing work is needed.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a lanai and a pool cage?
HomeGuide describes a lanai as an enclosure permanently attached to the house on one side and used as living space, typically with outdoor furniture. A pool cage surrounds the pool and can be attached or free-standing.
How much does it cost to rescreen a lanai?
HomeGuide puts lanai rescreening at $0.75 to $1.50 per square foot of screen, or about $1,500 to $3,000 total. Rescreening a smaller porch or patio runs about $400 to $1,500.
Can I replace my screens with glass or windows?
That goes beyond a screen repair. HomeGuide lists lanai glass panels at $6 to $20 per square foot for the glass plus $50 to $100 per panel in labor. Check with your city building department about permits before converting a screened space.
