Signs it's time to rescreen
A full rescreen replaces every panel of mesh on the enclosure at once. HomeGuide lists these as the signs that call for it:
- Mesh that's ripped, punctured, or turning shiny white
- Panels that are sagging, damaged or unraveling
- Tears along the aluminum members
- Missing, rusty or loose fasteners
- Algae growing on the screens
- Peeling or fading paint on the frame
Choosing your mesh
| Mesh | Good for |
|---|---|
| Standard 18/14 (or Super Screen 17/14) | Most pool cages |
| No-see-um 20/20 (or Super Screen 17/20) | Tiny insects, pine needles |
| Pet screen | Bottom panels, dogs and cats |
| Solar / privacy screen | West-facing or close-neighbor walls |
Mesh types and sizes as described by HomeGuide. Many owners mix types, for example pet screen on the bottom row and standard mesh above.

How a rescreen usually goes
- Measure and quote. The installer counts panels, notes roof style, height and any frame issues.
- Strip. Old mesh and spline come out of every track.
- Clean and check. Many pros power wash the tracks first, which HomeGuide says helps new mesh last longer. Fasteners and cables get checked.
- Screen. New mesh is rolled in panel by panel, roof first or last depending on the crew.
- Walk-through. Check every panel and door with the installer before you sign off.

Frequently asked questions
How long does pool screen mesh last?
HomeGuide says a properly maintained pool enclosure lasts 10 to 20 years, and warns that cheap screen can wear out in 3 to 4 years. Mesh brand and sun exposure make a big difference.
What is no-see-um screen?
It's a tighter 20/20 mesh that keeps out tiny biting insects and pine needles. Standard pool screen is 18/14. HomeGuide notes mesh size affects both what gets in and your view out.
Should I replace fasteners when I rescreen?
If the screws are rusty, it's the cheapest time to do it. HomeGuide estimates about $1,400 to replace fasteners during a rescreen versus about $2,400 on its own.
Do I need to be home?
Usually only at the start and end, as long as the installer can reach the backyard. Confirm access, pets and pool equipment with your contractor.
